Dridex is once again used by hackers to steal your money
A new variant of Dridex banking trojan has been discovered by our cybersecurity team inside a vicious phishing email campaign, with a surprising turn: the cybercriminals are using hacked FTP sites to store the infected documents.
It was a prominent takeoff from the standard HTTP interfaces that could mean a new trend is beginning.
The phishing effort happened last week and kept going around seven hours. The best targets were victims from France, UK, and Australia.
Messages utilized as a part of the phishing campaign, each had hypertext addresses to hijacked FTP servers that stored infected files. Those FTP addresses lured victims to download either DOC or XLS infected. Infected DOC documents, once opened, exploited the DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) included in Microsoft Office to download the Dridex payload. XLS documents used macros to download the same payload.
Messages were spruced up to look more official and credible by utilizing sender names like [email protected] and [email protected]
The famous phishing campaign utilized domains that are known as compromised and attached by the Necurs botnet.
FTP could likewise have been utilized as a hiding instrument, because all emails gateways and defense system may see FTPs as trusted hosts.
The cybercriminals don’t seem to be stressed over uncovering the FTP hosts they used, which means they have a rich supply of hacked hosts.
What makes the whole thing more curious is the use of FTP host and the low volume of the phishing campaign 9,500 messages.
Another curious thing is that Necurs isn’t used to his top potential, many other Necrus campaigns had a much larger scale then this campaign. That makes our cybersecurity team that this was just a test campaign, regarding FTP hosts.
This whole campaing relays on Microsoft DDE vulnerability that Microsoft refused to fix for a long time, which translates into standard terms that an interaction of a user is required for Dridex to be delivered.

A healthy company must perform a penetration test from time to time. The penetration test must execute against all the assets of the company, including the workers who are the most vulnerable to the social engineering attacks.
A penetration test can be done either by a security specialist from inside of the company or by hiring an external cyber security company who can take care of everything.
Besides penetration test, a company must have a minimum healthy cybersecurity system installed like antivirus or firewall.
CyberByte company can perform various penetration tests on all the spectrum of PCI/DSS compliance to the red team, perimeter testing, and social engineering.
