Cybercrime has overtaken offline theft

Cybersecurity researchers have analyzed some data and they have found an interesting and also alarming fact: cybercrime against households is nowadays more common than the robbery of theft!

For example, just in the UK, it was found that computer cyber attacks affected 1.8% of the population in the year ending which is about the same as violent crime, but way more than robbery 0.3%, or theft from the person 0.8%, and other theft of personal property 1.3%.

The reports also showed that around 1 million devices were cyber hacked in UK households, which doesn’t include figures on cybercrime reported by businesses.

Remember everything can be hacked. In order to stay away from any threats related to the cyber world, we recommend the install of antivirus for Windows or antivirus for Mac on every device that you own, depending on which OS your device is running. If you are a company, it is also recommended to hire every year a specialized cybersecurity company that will run annual tests on your company’s network. These tests include penetration testing and ethical hacking tests;

Good news is that computer viruses alone had encountered a 25% drop due to the falling popularity of computers, but still overall computer crime is up whit 12% over the same period of 2018.
This up spike happens because of a driven increase in hacking – social media and email cybercrimes over the 12 months.

Because of the increasing awareness of falling victim to hacking among the public fraud figures didn’t change significantly from the previous year, with online scams now accounting for 56% of the total, or 1.9m incidents in the UK, according to the report.
Last year there was a 145% rise in malware, but this year that same figures dropped by 25% as hackers switched tactics to hijack email and social media accounts.

This new tactics now present a greater risk for companies because hackers are still exploiting the weakest link in security, people. These last digits are real and palpable evidence that shows that hackers are still bypassing defenses; because of this, we must also assume that malware is breaking through and remaining undetected.

We would continue to monitor this cybersecurity problem. Meanwhile, users should keep a keen eye out for any cyber attacks.
