Browser extensions are heaven for hackers and malicious advertising companies
Be careful what browser extension do you use! We know they add useful features to browsers, but some of them are a real threat to both privacy and security.
A browser extension is like some plug in for your browser, and all major browsers like Chrome and Chromium, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, and Edge supports them. Many of them add useful features to the browsers which block ads on Web pages, translate text from one language to another or offer support as 3rd party password managers.
There are plenty of them for productivity, customization, shopping, games, etc.
But as everybody knows where is something good must be something terrible too.
So does here many malicious extensions are downloaded shady trough links and 3rd party sites or even trough official markets like in the case of Android malware that is available on Google Play from time to time.
An excellent example of this is four extensions available in the Google Chrome Web Store which have been discovered by our security researchers team. The recognized extensions are malicious they pose as sticky notes apps, but in fact, they are bots that are clicking adds secretly to make money for the cybercriminals. You may ask how is this possible? Well, it is because of inferior browsers security regarding toolbars. For browsers that permissions management exists only in theory, in reality, browsers allow extensions to do anything they want by default if a user doesn’t grant permissions upon install of a toolbar the toolbar doesn’t install.
We had updated our antivirus solution for Mac and Windows to be able to detect any rogue plugins installed into your browser, keeping the users safe and secure all the time.
Because many toolbars don’t produce money for their developer’s multiple evil companies are buying them offering good prices that developers don’t refuse. They apply this kind of tactics because browser extensions are updated automatically so if a good extension has a high number of users it is good because with the next update a malicious update can be installed without their knowledge like in the case of popular plugin called Copyfish or in the case of popular Chrome extension for customizing YouTube that was sold by its developers to a company that modified it into an adware.
Even the useful extensions are sometimes dangerous because they have permission to read and change all your data on the websites you visit. The most notorious case was that of Web of Trust extension that used to rate sites based on crowdsourced opinion. The problem was in this situations that even it was specified in its EULA the developers sold the data they had collected to 3rd party buyers without anonymizing it.
Which lead to removing of the extension form multiple browser markets for a couple of weeks until the problem was resolved.
Our cybersecurity team advises everyone on how to use browsers extensions safe and secure despite the fact that they can be very dangerous:
– install only a few extensions that are indispensable for you because if you have many they can slow your system, also they can be used as future attack vectors.
– install them only form official Web markets
– be aware of what permission do you give to them
– always add an extra layer of protection to your system by installing a top antivirus solution along with those extensions.

Most of the companies don't care about cybersecurity until they suffer a breach.
A healthy company must perform a penetration test from time to time. The penetration test must execute against all the assets of the company, including the workers who are the most vulnerable to the social engineering attacks.
A penetration test can be done either by a security specialist from inside of the company or by hiring an external cyber security company who can take care of everything.
Besides penetration test, a company must have a minimum healthy cybersecurity system installed like antivirus or firewall.
CyberByte company can perform various penetration tests on all the spectrum of PCI/DSS compliance to the red team, perimeter testing, and social engineering.
We also provide services to employee profiling and cyber threat monitoring, since most of the data breaches this day come from the inside of the company.
To check our penetration test services go to the Services tab from the main menu.
