945 data breaches and up to 4.5 billion compromised data records, only in the first half of 2018

In the first half of 2018, there were 945 data breaches that led to 4.5 billion data records being compromised worldwide.
If we compare this to the same period in 2017 we will see that the number of lost, stolen or compromised records increased by 133%.

There were a total of six social media breaches, including the Cambridge Analytica-Facebook incident, accounted for over 56 percent of total records compromised. 189 of the total 945 breachers (20%) had an unknown or unaccounted number of compromised data records.

Remember everything can be hacked. In order to stay away from any threats related to the cyber world, we recommend the install of antivirus for Windows or antivirus for Mac on every device that you own, depending on which OS your device is running. If you are a company, it is also recommended to hire every year a specialized cybersecurity company that will run annual tests on your company’s network. These tests include penetration testing and ethical hacking tests;

Almost 15 billion data records have been exposed since 2013. During the first six months of 2018, more than 25 million records were compromised or exposed every day, including medical, credit card and financial data or personally identifiable information.
Hackers caused the largest percentage of data breaches (56 percent), they are also accounted for over 80 percent of all stolen, compromised or lost records. The accidental loss represents only 879 million (9 percent) of the records lost this half.

Identity theft continues to be the leading type of data breach and financial access incidents come in second.
Industries most affected by data breaches

If we look at countries North America still makes up the majority of all breaches and the number of compromised records, 59%, and 72% respectively. Australia comes in second and after is Europe from which The United Kingdom remains the most breached country in the region.

We would continue to monitor all cybersecurity threats. Meanwhile, users should keep a keen eye out for any cyber attacks. Remember to use an antivirus for Windows or antivirus for Mac in every device that you own, depending on which OS your machine is running, If you are a company we recommend to hire every year a specialized cybersecurity company that will run annual tests on your company’s network, tests like this include: penetration testing and ethical hacking.
